Thank You Letter for an Award: 20 Examples to Adapt
A thank-you letter for an award should thank the person or organisation that gave it, name the award, say briefly what it means to you, credit the people who helped you earn it, and close with a forward-looking line. Send it within a week or so of receiving the award. Three short paragraphs are usually enough; the 20 examples below show how to adjust for different kinds of recognition.
Who to thank
Awards usually involve more people than the presenter. Consider writing to:
- The organisation or committee that selected you
- Whoever nominated you, if you know
- Your manager, teacher or mentor
- Colleagues, teammates or volunteers who contributed
- A sponsor who funded the award
Each letter can be short, but the nominator and the people who did the work alongside you deserve their own note.
The structure
- Thanks and the name of the award. "Thank you for selecting me for the 2026 Community Impact Award."
- What it means. One or two sentences, specific to you.
- Credit to others. Name people or teams where you can.
- Looking ahead. How you'll build on it, or a final note of appreciation.
Keep it humble without being self-deprecating. "I don't deserve this" makes the committee's decision sound wrong. "I'm honoured, and I share this with the team" is gracious and accurate.
Tips before you write
- Be specific. Mention the event, the citation or a moment from the ceremony.
- Keep the tone of the award. A national industry honour calls for formality; an internal "Employee of the Month" can be warm and light.
- Don't turn it into a speech. Save the long story for the acceptance remarks, if any.
- Proofread names and titles. Run the draft through a grammar checker and double-check the award's exact name.

19. Writing or creative award

20. Short note to a colleague who helped you win
Hi Lucas, I wanted to say thank you properly. The design award wouldn't have happened without your late nights on the prototype. I mentioned you in my acceptance, but you deserve a personal note as well. Lunch is on me this week.
Email or handwritten?
Email is fine for most workplace and academic awards. A handwritten card suits lifetime honours, community awards and anything presented by an individual who went out of their way for you. For formal organisations, a printed letter on letterhead can be appropriate.
If you need to write several letters, draft the core message once and then personalise each with a specific detail. An AI email responder or a tone changer can help you produce a more formal or more relaxed version of the same note, but add the personal detail yourself.
FAQ
How soon should I send a thank-you letter for an award?
Within a week is ideal. If time has passed, send it anyway; a late thank-you is better than none.
Should I thank the judges or the organisation?
Address the organisation or committee chair, and thank the judges collectively within the letter unless you know a specific person was responsible.
How long should the letter be?
Two to four short paragraphs. Brief, sincere and specific works better than a long letter.
Can I post my thank-you publicly instead?
A public post is a nice addition, especially for professional awards, but a direct letter to the organisers and nominator is still the courteous step.
