🔬 Citation Generators

CSE Citation Generator

Format science references in CSE style using citation-sequence, citation-name or name-year.

What the CSE Citation Generator does

CSE style is common in biology, ecology and other life sciences. It is unusual because it offers three systems: citation-sequence numbers sources as they appear, citation-name alphabetizes them before numbering, and name-year uses author and year in the text. Your journal or instructor will tell you which one to use, and mixing them is a common mistake.

Tell this generator which system you need and paste your source details. It returns references with CSE punctuation, initials without periods and abbreviated journal names. If you do not name a system, it uses citation-sequence and says so. Nothing is guessed; missing details are marked in each entry and listed at the end for you to look up.

How to use it

01

Name the CSE system and paste your source details.

02

Press Format.

03

Copy the reference list and add any details flagged as missing.

What people use it for

Biology lab reports

Format references for undergraduate lab reports that require CSE name-year style.

Ecology field studies

Cite journal articles, government reports and field guides consistently.

Journal manuscripts

Reorder and renumber references when a journal uses citation-name instead of citation-sequence.

Questions

Which CSE system should I use?

Check your instructor's or journal's guidelines. If you are unsure, citation-sequence is the default here and is widely accepted.

Which edition is this?

It follows the 9th edition of Scientific Style and Format.

Does it renumber sources for citation-name?

Yes. It alphabetizes by author first, then numbers the list in that order.

Can it fill in missing volumes or pages?

No. Missing details are marked so you can check the original article.
