What the LaTeX Bibliography Generator does

Writing BibTeX by hand is tedious. Each entry needs the right type, every author joined with and, braces around acronyms so they keep their capitals, and special characters such as ampersands and accents escaped. One stray character can stop your document from compiling. This generator writes the entries for you from the details you paste.

It works with plain descriptions or with references already formatted in APA, MLA or another style. Each entry gets a readable citation key you can use with \cite. Fields that BibTeX needs but you did not supply are set to MISSING rather than guessed, and a short list at the end tells you what to fill in before compiling.

How to use it

01

Paste source details or existing references, one per paragraph.

02

Press Generate.

03

Copy the entries into your .bib file and replace any MISSING fields.

Questions

Does it work with biblatex?

Yes. Standard BibTeX entries are read by both BibTeX and biblatex. Add biblatex-specific fields yourself if you need them.

How are citation keys made?

From the first author's surname, the year and the first word of the title, all lowercase, for example vaswani2017attention.

Will it fetch DOIs?

No. It has no web access. Fields you do not supply are marked MISSING.

Can I paste APA references?

Yes. Already formatted references in any style are converted to BibTeX.
